Review of Zagat

Is the Zagat Wine Club really as good as it looks? We have evaluated many different wine clubs and have the information you need to decide if Zagat is right for you.

The Zagat Wine Club is essentially the same club as the WSJ Wine Club and Laithwaites but with different selections. Each quarter you will receive your choice of 12 red bottles, 12 white bottles, or a mix of 6 red and 6 white.

For a limited time, you can save $160 on 15 bottles of red wine rather than the regular 12 bottles plus free gift.

There are often some duplicate wines within each shipment. With a price of $69.99 for the first shipment, each bottle is $5.84 $4.67 not including shipping and handling. After the first quarter, the price goes up to $139.99 plus shipping and handling. However, there is no minimum purchase requirement and you may cancel at any time.

Wines in this club come from all over the world, and you will receive tasting notes for each bottle plus a binder to hold the tasting notes. The tasting notes are a good way for you to learn more about the wines, wineries, and even countries of origin. If you find a wine in your case that you like in particular, you can order more of that wine from Zagat at a discount.

The Zagat Wine Club is best for personal purchases as opposed to gifts unless you are planning on taking delivery of the case yourself and then delivering it personally. It does not come with any type of gift enclosure and the case itself is very heavy. The gift with purchase, however, would make a nice gift in and of itself. These gifts do change periodically.

My favorite bottle from the case so far has been the 2010 The Holdings Vintner's Select Cabernet Sauvignon from Paso Robles. Cabernet Sauvignon is not usually one of my favorite wines, but this one was incredibly good. I definitely think that bottle is worth in the $12-18 range.

If you are looking for a good way to try a wide variety of value priced wine, the basic Zagat Wine Club is a good choice. If you are looking for a higher quality wine, they also have the Zagat Wine Reserve Club, which is a little bit more expensive but still sold by the case.

Host a Wine Tasting Using a Case Wine Club

We’ve reviewed dozens of wine clubs, including a few case clubs (Cellar’s Wine Club Quarterly Case Club, Laithwaites, Virgin, WSJ or Zagat Wines, and Windsor’s “The Collector”). Many of these clubs are great for keeping your wine cellar stocked. But they can also be used to host

Zagat Wine Club Review with Video

By Tricia Meyer on November 30, 2012   /   Wine Reviews   /   4 Comments Zagat Wine Club with Gifts

My review of the Zagat Wine Club felt a little like deja vu because my very first wine club review was the WSJ Wine Club. Both clubs being from Direct Wines, they are very similar. However, the gifts that you receive and the exact wines in the

  1. Zagat Wine club customer service is Pathetic and the worst among other wine clubs like Laithwaite wines. They gave estimated date of delivery of about 6 days and insisted that someone above 18 should be at home when wine is delivered. However there was no advice when they could not ship the wine due to their internal issues resulting in wasted time for a person to sit at home. After a follow up of multiple emails and phone call I was advised that Zagat does not have a system for sending emails to customers for delivery of wines. However I was assured that the case will be delivered on 5th/6th September – within 12 days of the order guaranteed. Today I am advised – after pushing them for reply that they are sorry and cannot deliver till next week due to more internal reasons! No specific date till now! For an organization that gives ratings to others – I would put ZAGAT Wine Club at the bottom of the pile Maximum Half a star out of a possible 5 stars …

    • Hi Rajesh,

I had a similar issue with my club deliveries when ordering from the various Direct Wine Clubs. The positive is that they are able to ship to more states than any other clubs because they rely on local distributors for delivery. The negative is that they are at the mercy of those local distributors. I didn’t like that I couldn’t get an exact shipping date with the clubs that ship by UPS or FedEx. But I also know that without this arrangement, they wouldn’t be shipping to my state at all.

My best suggestions for people considering a wine club and the delivery issues would be 1) have it shipped to your place of employment if you can so that you don’t have to worry about the delivery window, and 2) if delivery is an issue, pick a club that you know will deliver via FedEx or UPS (like The California Wine Club, Cellars Wine Club, etc).

I’m sorry that you had a bad experience and hope that the wine will make up for it. We appreciate you leaving your feedback. It’s exactly the kind of information our readers are looking for!

      Tricia

  2. Do NOT join Zagat Wine. Customer Service is not just horrible, It’s inexistent. They say in the website you can send emails, but I’ve send them 5 emails so far and all of them bounced back to my Spam box as invalid recipient. The I try calling by phone and the waiting list is so long that I couldnt really wait any longer for someone to talk to me. They sent me a case a while ago without my approval and I had to send It back and cancel It in the credit card. Im trying to cancel my membership Its been over a month and with no success. Dont fall in their trap, dont give them your credit/debit card information.

  3. here is my latest cancellation email to Zagat Wines:

    Hi –

I just wanted to make sure your corporate office is aware of the very bad experience I just had. Several weeks ago, I got an email that I would be receiving a Holiday delivery of wine, and that I didn’t need to do anything…it would be on its way shortly. I was a little upset to find out that if I didn’t want the random delivery, I couldn’t just go online and decline it, like my normal recurring delivery. I had to call and wait on hold to cancel. So I did.

Then, today, the shipment arrives at my door. I have a doorman who wouldn’t know to refuse delivery. I checked my credit card, and indeed I had been charged for a wine delivery yesterday. I was quite upset.

I called customer service and was informed that I could either have 20% off the shipment, or return it for refund. I was fine with that, but she stated I won’t receive the refund until the shipment arrives back in your warehouse. This is ridiculous. YOUR company made a mistake, and now the onus is on ME to rectify the situation?

I told her that was unacceptable, and I will call my credit card company and refuse the charge. She asked me to wait on hold. She returned and told me that they can refund the money as soon as they get notification from the shipping carrier that the package is en route. They couldn’t do it any soon because “how do we know you are going to send it back?”

I CANCELLED MY ACCOUNT ON THE SPOT!

Not only did you cause me to go out of my way to ensure I didn’t get a shipment I didn’t want, you then make me go out of my way to get the shipment back to you, and challenge my credibility.

As an executive in the luxury retail business, I thought you might want to know what happened. I would want the same if I found something out about MY customers’ experience.

    Best,
    Darren

  4. Thanks for that feedback, Darren. Is seems like the majority of the complaints that we have seen about all of the Direct Wines companies (WSJ, Zagat, etc) seem to be with the customer service and cancellation/suspension issues.

  5. I’ve been a Zagat wine club member for over a year now. I’ve never had a problem getting notified about an upcoming shipment and cancelling it if I don’t want it. I’ve also been away from home a few times during a delivery and typically just direct them to leave it at a local office and then pick it up myself. No big deal. I’ve never been on hold more than a couple of minutes when calling them. I really enjoy the club as I love to try new wines and don’t have a lot of time to shop. They now offer a flat shipping rate for an entire year ($89) and I’ve been taking advantage by stocking up, which really brings down the price per bottle.
